One of the things I always look forward to when traveling is trying where locals actually eat. For my first meal in Hong Kong, I found myself at Cafe de Coral, a well-known fast-casual chain that’s been part of everyday Hong Kong life for decades.
As a first-timer, I went straight for the classics. My table was filled with sunny-side-up eggs paired with sausage and toast, creamy scrambled eggs served alongside a juicy pork chop with sauce, and a bowl of macaroni soup topped with ham. Nothing fancy, nothing overdone — just straightforward comfort food.
Looking back, this meal set the tone for my food experiences in Hong Kong. It reminded me that travel is not always about chasing popular spots or picture perfect plates. Sometimes, the most memorable meals are the quiet ones that help you understand a place and its people. And for my first taste of Hong Kong, Cafe de Coral felt just right.
Taipei 101 showed incredible this structure. I remember standing in front of Taipei 101, completely in awe of its height and structure. You can’t help but feel small. Its height alone is impressive.
What also fascinated me was learning about the tuned mass damper inside, a massive engineering marvel designed to keep the building stable against strong winds and earthquakes. Knowing that such a giant structure relies on precision, balance, and thoughtful design made me appreciate it even more.
Damper
Moments like this make you realize how architecture isn’t just about size or appearance. It’s about resilience, innovation, and the quiet brilliance that holds everything together.
Taipei 101 isn’t just something you visit once , it’s something you find yourself thinking about long after you’ve left.
📍 This was my first country to visit, and I was instantly in awe. Stepping into Nan Lian Garden.
📍 This place will always hold a special spot in my heart,b it was where I first stepped outside my comfort zone and into the world. I remember feeling equal parts excited and overwhelmed, taking in the rhythm of a city that never seemed to slow down. It was the start of my travel journey, even if I didn’t fully realize it yet.
📍 The moment I stepped inside, the city seemed to soften. The noise faded, my pace slowed, and suddenly I was surrounded by balance, from the Tang-dynasty–style architecture to the koi ponds and meticulously maintained greenery. It felt calm, intentional, and grounding. A gentle reminder that even in one of Asia’s busiest cities, peace can exist.
📍 What I loved most was how accessible and welcoming it felt. Getting there is easy too,a short MTR ride to Diamond Hill and a quick exit later, you’re suddenly surrounded by stillness.
📍 In the middle of all that movement, I found myself unexpectedly drawn to Nan Lian Garden, a quiet sanctuary tucked within Hong Kong’s urban landscape. Looking back, it feels meaningful that this was where my journey began. Not in a loud attraction or a checklist-worthy landmark, but in a place that invited stillness and reflection. It taught me early on that travel isn’t just about seeing new places — it’s about how those places make you feel.
📍 As this marked the beginning of my travel journey, I couldn’t help but feel grateful. Grateful for that first step, for choosing curiosity over comfort, and for realizing that the world holds so much beauty beyond what’s familiar. If this was how my journey started, I knew then that I was only just getting started.
📍 Helpful tips: Nan Lian Garden is open to the public daily from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., while the Chi Lin Nunnery welcomes guests from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
📍 Best part? Admission is completely free.Getting there is easy just take the MTR to Diamond Hill Station and exit at C2, and you’ll pop up right near the park.

On January 15, 2025, the Art Gallery of The Manila Hotel hosted the opening reception of Directions VI, a solo exhibition of Filipino contemporary artist and City of Manila Vice Mayor, honorable Yul Servo Nieto. The event celebrated the fusion of artistry and heritage, as Nieto unveiled a collection of works inspired by Filipino-Chinese traditions and culture.
The event commenced with a warm opening remarks delivered by The Manila Hotel vice president for sales and marketing, Marvin Kim Tan, highlighting the institution’s commitment to supporting local art and culture. Following this, the artist delivered a speech sharing his inspiration behind the art pieces and announced that proceeds from the sales will go towards purchasing vital medical equipment—such as wheelchairs, nebulizers, hearing aids, blood pressure monitors, and walkers—to be donated to those in need. Manila City Mayor Honey Lacuna Pangan also delivered a few words before joining Vice Mayor Nieto and Marvin Kim Tan for the ceremonial ribbon cutting, marking the exhibit’s official launch.
In Directions VI, Nieto reinvents his signature metal art pieces with elements of modern Cubism, Cartography or the art of map-making, and Assemblage art. Moving beyond his earlier focus on planes, lines, and negative space, he now incorporates everyday objects—bolts, nuts, screws, and hinges—as symbolic markers. These striking pieces pay tribute to Manila’s cultural richness and include depictions of Manila’s Chinese temples and historic districts like Binondo and San Nicolas.
The exhibition’s centerpiece, Temple Splendor, reimagines Chinese temples with golden nuts arranged on a grid-like map of Manila. Complementing the wall-mounted works are two free-standing sculptures—Nest of Healing and Icons of Heritage. Forged from bronze and gold-plated alloys, these pieces explore themes of healing and cultural preservation.
As the Chinese New Year draws near, Directions VI pays homage to the rich traditions of Manila’s Chinese temples. These vibrant hubs of cultural activity come alive with lion and dragon dances, incense lighting, and offerings of lucky foods—time-honored practices that reinforce familial and cultural unity.
Nieto’s latest creations highlight the significance of safeguarding these cherished traditions while exploring new dimensions of artistic expression.
Directions VI is now on display at The Manila Hotel’s Art Gallery. Admission is free. For interested buyers, call +632 85270011 or +632 53015500, or email r.lo@themanilahotel.com.

Me, I love my alone time and doing things with the people that I love. When I feel a little burned out, I fill my cup by doing the things that I love. That can be a bit of painting, reading, spending time with my loved ones, and now, I’m attempting to do pickleball,” Catriona says.
More than self-care, travel goals are also at the top of most people’s yearly resolutions. Social media personality David Guison is aiming for more travels this year as they inspire him to create more content. David has positive tips about owning one’s goals for the new year, advising that “As early as January, write your goals in a planner or even just your notes app to manifest them. I did this last year and I achieved those goals! But remember that those goals won’t work if you don’t do the work [to achieve them].”
